Short Description of the Organization / Department
The Faculty of Modern Languages is one of the leading faculties in Poland with members researching literature, culture, linguistics, and history.
Our academics have expertise in a wide range of research areas focusing, among others, on the issues related to languages and literatures, identity, memory studies, comparative studies, and social trends. The application of the most recent research methods and tools ensures the reliability and high value of their findings, which are disseminated via conferences and academic publications. Our staff enjoy worldwide recognition in their respective fields and cooperate with the most prominent representatives of the world’s academic community. The seat of the Faculty is the most modern and innovative university building in the close proximity to the main campus and the University Library. It is perfectly located with an easy access to the city centre. The place can be reached by an underground or a bus both from the Chopin airport and the central railway station.

1. ERC Starting Grant “The Concept of Teotl: a Complex Approach to the Principal Religious Category of pre-Hispanic Central Mexico”. Teotl was a key concept in the religious worldview of the Nahua Indians.

area 1: Dickens’s writings and their cultural afterlife (links with Victorian psychology, the Gothic, illustration, Victorian popular culture, postolonialism, theatre, etc.)

area 2: development of the English language (phonology, morphology and lexis, esp. of the times of Chaucer and Shakespeare)

area 3: language teaching, in particular: developing multilingual competence to support language learning Mediation as a linguistic activity Assessment and certification of language competence

area 4: identity studies, memory studies, multiculturalism especially in Switzerland, new methods in humanities

area 5: cultural animal studies [representations of animals in popular culture/film/literature and/or multispecies ethnography with an emphasis on interdisciplinary research projects that link the humanities and the life sciences]
