Short Description of the Organization / Department
Juan Mora Pastor, Analytical Atomic Spectrometry Group, welcomes expressions of interest from Postdoctoral researchers with an excellent track record of research and publication to apply jointly to the European Commission Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme in 2023 (MSCA-PF-2023).

Analytical Atomic Spectrometry Group is an internationally well reputed team with more than 20 years of experience in atomic spectrometry techniques and consists on professors of the Department of Analytical Chemistry, Nutrition and Food Sciences in the University of Alicante.

The main research lines are related to sample introduction systems and fundamental studies about non-spectral interferences in plasma-based techniques (ICPOES, ICPMS and MIPOES) but, also analysis of food and environmental sample is of our concern. Nowadays we also have two strong research lines about nanomaterials characterization using ICPMS in the single particle mode (spICPMS) and inmunoassays coupled to ICPMS. Recently we started a new research line based on the possibilities/evaluation of a new design of a Microwave Inductively Coupled Plasma (MICAP) that is the only microwave plasma based coupled to a simultaneous spectrometer commercially available that employs an improved microwave cavity (CerawaveTM).

HOST INSTITUTION

The University of Alicante (UA) was created in 1979. In 2021 UA educated and trained 31.650 students (only 321 internationals, due to COVID-19 pandemic -usually around 3.000-) who are enrolled in any of the 50 undergraduate and 87 postgraduate programmes: consequently, it is proportionally one of the fastest growing universities in Spain. Thus, the UA employs 4.125 researchers and management staff (47% women), which involves an annual budget of 234 million Euros. Currently, UA is investing near to 68M Euros for boosting frontier research and technology transfer processes via spin off, licensing and international promotion mainly. In 2021, the University received 34.5 million Euros in grants at National, Regional, European level and private R&D and achieved 835 new ones thanks to its 251 research groups hosted in 13 Research Institutes, most of them multidisciplinary-based. Despite its youth, the University of Alicante is already present in the three main university rankings in the world ARWU-FIELD (Shanghai), Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and Times Higher Education (THE) World University.
Amongst this international activity, UA´s involvement in Research Framework Programmes has been increasing since the 5th Research Framework Programme (FP) and improving leadership, taking part in 50 projects during FP5 and FP6, 49 during FP7, 58 during H2020 (4 coordinated by UA) and the start of Horizon Europe makes us think that the upward trend will continue over the next few years.

UA supports the researchers at legal, financial and administrative level in a centralized way, thanks to the International RTD Projects Unit. It has a strong track record in supporting European RTD-consortia in proposal preparation, communication with the funding authorities and project reporting. UA coordinates the European IP Helpdesk and participates in all the IP Helpdesk nodes worldwide and the is Regional Node of Enterprise Europe Network for 14 years now. Furthermore, the UA became EURAXESS contact point through University of Alicante’s Research Talent Attraction Office, intended as a one-stop, centrally managed platform to support researchers wishing to join our University.

With the aim of ensuring and adequate framework for researchers and contributing towards the enhancement of the prestige and attractiveness of the research career within the European Research Area, the UA has been awarded with the HRS4R seal, which reveals the commitment to the principles of “The European Charter for Researchers” and “The Code of Conduct for the recruitment of Researchers”.

Thematic areas and list of supervisors who are looking forward to preparing a project proposal with postdoctoral researchers
The applicant, according to his previous background and interest, could participate in any of the abovementioned research lines: nanomaterials characterization by spICPMS, immunoassays coupled to ICPMS or studies about MICAP performance. All of them are part of the new challenges in atomic spectrometry and show a high level of innovation.
